MOULTONBOROUGH _ Residents of a half dozen Lake Winnipesaukee islands will be able to enjoy regularly scheduled trash, recycling and household hazardous waste removal service this coming summer thanks to a land-water partnership between two local businesses.

The land part will be handled by Good Neighbor Services, LLC, while the water component will be taken care of by Ambrose Marine Construction.

The service will be available on Bear Island and nearby Mark and Pine islands as well as Cow Island, Whortleberry and Dow islands according to Barbara Rando of Good Neighbor Services and Paul Ambrose of Ambrose Marine.

``It’s a real convenience for island residents, and, since we’re the major commercial hauler in the area who recycles, people who want to do the right thing by the environment can be confident they’re dealing with businesses that share their priorities,’’ says Rando.

``It’s a service not being provided at this time which really makes a lot of sense,’’ says Ambrose, who got the idea for the partnership while watching Rando’s trucks go up and down Moultonborough Neck hauling for her customers last year.

Good Neighbor Services is now in its fourth year of operation and has a full staff of part-timers with varying skills to meet the specific needs of each customer. GNS operates year-round and provides a host of services, including doorstep trash and recycle hauling in Moultonborough, plus, demolition debris removal, special event coverage, moving and relocation and clutter and estate cleanouts to surrounding towns. The business specializes in supporting customers that need an extra hand here and there: senior citizens and absentee homeowners.

``We’re friendly, trustworthy and flexible and not afraid to get our hands dirty,’’ says Rando, who moved to Moultonborough after taking an early retirement from her executive job with FedEx.

``I got tired of traveling back and forth to corporate headquarters in Memphis Tennessee. I like the lifestyle in the Lakes Region and the friendliness of the people,’’ says Rando, who became deeply involved in various volunteer activities in the community and saw a business opportunity when a friend decided to sell his family trash hauling business. After putting her female, corporate and community service experience spin on things, there has been no looking back.

Since then she’s grown the business and acquired a reputation as a ``can-do’’ businessowner with a team that specializes in customer service.

``We have fun too, ‘’ says Rando. ``We’ve been the official trash hauler for the Lees Mill Steamboat Rally for the past several years. We have also been called upon to clean up after weddings, neighborhood association parties and yard clean-ups, fancy and not-so-fancy family gatherings of hundreds of visitors, and the like. We can take the stress of it all away from you with our discrete and efficient methods,’’ says Rando.

Both Ambrose and Rando say that they expect a major part of their joint venture will involve not only island trash pickup, but also cleanup de-cluttering services for island residents, including hauling away of large items such as old appliances, accumulated junk and debris as well as hazardous waste such as paint, household chemicals and batteries.

``We’ll send our crews out to the islands to do the whole thing,’’ says Rando, who says the cleanups can be individually scheduled and will see close coordination of the water and land parts of the operation..

``We’ve already talked to people at the regional hazardous waste facility in Wolfeboro and they’re really excited about what we’re doing,’’ says Ambrose. ``They say a lot of hazardous materials are ending up in marina dumpsters because it’s so inconvenient for island residents to get rid off. With only one hazardous waste cleanup day per year for each community in the Lakes Region, it’s not hard to see why that happens. We will solve that problem.’’

No stranger to the solid waste business, Ambrose has worked for the last four years for Waste Management in Hampton.

But he’s now left that corporate giant to rejoin his family’s business, Ambrose Brothers, a well-known and respected construction, site work, land clearing and logging business, where he heads up Ambrose Marine Construction, a full service marine construction business which offers a variety of services, including construction of buildings, docks and breakwaters, as well as handling the intricate permitting process for lake construction projects..

Last year Ambrose Brothers partnered with Tobin Greer, a long-time summer resident of Bear Island, to purchase Lakes Region Marine and has retained key workers from that firm who have years of experience working on the lake.

``We’ve got four barges, including one which holds up to 80 tons and can handle large 10-wheelers and construction equipment, as well as crane barge and pile driver and others used for rock placement and carpentry. We have all the capabilities needed to handle any kind of marine construction project,’’ says Ambrose.

He says that the trash and recycle collection, cleanup and hazardous waste removal services will be an important addition to the main marine construction business.

``It’s a form of multi-tasking. We’ll be able to have our barges perform different services while they’re out on the lake while providing a much-needed service which will be good for the environment and for the recycling efforts which generate money for the communities we serve,’’ says Ambrose.

Rando says that she’s excited about the opportunity to extend Good Neighbor Services to island residents.

``Once people see what we’ve done for their neighbors and what can be accomplished in a trusting business relationship, I think we’re in for a very busy summer,’’ she says.

The new business team is currently offering 10 percent discounts for those who book island trash and recycling services for a minimum of 10 weeks by May 15.
